Reacting to UNPOPULAR Opinions in METAL!
Get your pitchforks ready folks as we talk about some of metal's most unpopular opinions. Was Sepultura post Max Cavalera a good thing? Should Dave Mustaine think about vocal help in Megadeth? Are Deathcore bands like Lorna Shore and Slaughter to Prevail meant to be enjoyed live vs recorded? These are just some of the topics you brought to our attention.
This will likely be an ongoing series. Drop more unpopular opinions about metal in the comments.

Other bands like Frostbite Orckings get away with using AI and no one bats an A-eye. I would listen Necrophagist over Archspire but that is personal taste, total bullshit that third album is done and not released
I think this did NOT age well. And this deserve a followup report on Wintersun Time II campaign. Aand an apology, for the 'scam' accusation among other lightly said.. stuff. :) So come on guys, if you followed through the campaign and all the statements and responses, the amount of content Jari finished and for new albums amount of work, please adjust your reactions. Cheers
Haha, what in the hell is on on your TV at the 14:23 mark?
My January picks include -Blood Red Throne -Upon Stone -Knoll -Dissimulator -Cognizance
Dani is top!
Slaughter to Prevail's drummer has so much taste bell work and one hand snare grinds. 🤘🏻🤘🏻
Opeth, Metallica, Type O, and Death some great stuff. I got to see opeth, metallica, and type O live and they were amazing. I also really like Red Fang, dark tranquillity, morbid Angel, skeletonwitch, the sword, baroness, cynic. Well and much more.
I just have so much trouble getting into them, just so much of it feels like it’s just shock value instead of good song writing. But that’s just my opinion. Oh and just found your channel and I’m getting back into metal and so far great job guys!
Is that American Werewolf in London playing in the background?!
Ok, I now know what I missed 2023... My Album of the year was Hellripper Warlock's Grim and Withered Hags. Gotta check out some of your picks
Great Ranking... Fall is on constant replay since it came out... I love this Band! I got into them with Winter Thrice, and what a great starting point that was. Keep up your great work - thx!
Great Video, and I see what I missed.... Glad to see you have Primordial on the list... I saw them live in 2022, they really delivered! Opening with Where Greater Men have Fallen, so epic. just awesome
If you dudes haven't heard the album Despondency Chord Progressions by Selbst, give it a spin. Solo black metal project out of South America, one of my favorite albums of the year. Think you'll dig it.
It took a long time for Bryan's voice to grow on me, but now I can't imagine it any other way. Genuinely pissed, and this album is a destroyer
This may look obnoxious, but I’ll go 1 by 1: 1. Sepultura was better with Max, but he is salty, and that final run of Machine Messiah and Quadra is amazing; Quadra is for me top 3 in their discography. 2. I just saw Megadeth live, and Mustaine sounded great. You can hear his age, but he can still do it. 3. I don’t like Deathcore, so I can’t be objective at all. 4. I’ve got a hot take of my own: Morbid Angel should release a final album true to what they’ve been for most of their career and then retire. I love them, but that’s just how I feel. 5. Tech death is not really my favorite, but it mostly offers a lot of quality music, so I’m good with it. Hope that wasn’t annoying, nice video guys 🤘🤘
Thanks for responding to my take on Necrophagist/tech death 🤘 That clarinet clip is sick 😂 Will give Archspire another shot. Haven't gotten into them or bands like Obscura, so a list of best modern tech death bands would be really interesting. The best tech stuff I have heard recently is from established bands (Dying Fetus, Nile, Suffocation) although BandCamp brings up a few gems (Dead and Dripping's 2023 album)
1. The Angel And The Dark River 2. The Light At The End Of The World¹⁹⁹⁹ 3. The Dreadful Hours²⁰⁰¹ 4. Feel The Misery²⁰¹⁵ 5. Like Gods Of The Sun¹⁹⁹⁶ 6. A Mortal Binding²⁰²⁴ 7. I don't care for Illud Divinum Insanus, but I do defend that album a little more than most fans. I think they deserve props for taking a risk and going in a slightly different direction; even though it didn't pay off. And there are a few bangers on it as well! It's just wildly inconsistent and super corny at times.
Related to the Dave Mustaine topic, I'd like to see Dani Filth step back as a manager/composer only for COF, just how happened to Angela Gossow with Arch Enemy, because his vocals live have been really inconsistent lately. He was definetely good during the 90s and early 00s, but he seems tired now
I cannot recommend 'Sigh No More' by Gamma Ray enough. Fucking bizarre album art
Check out the new Horn Daudswiärk!!! Please!!! Best regards!
Techdeth gets as much unwarranted hate as dethcore, but a fraction of the critical attention. Would be interested in your views/recs in the genre. It drives my friends nuts. I love it. I know who I like, curious who you like.
I don't understand the first, if I see Max's name on any project I will check it out. Love Soulfly, Cavalera Conspiracy, Killer Be Killed, you name it
I've never even listened to dream theater. The only reason i know james labrie is from his older hair metal band called winter rose. I only heard the one song by them called "I'll never fall in love again." Good tune though. I don't find his singing annoying at all on that. Sounds really good, actually.
Death and black metal are just as cheesy as power metal
These debates will be fun to listen to for the next hour long look my take on it is this how about we just use AI for what it was meant for to bring down the enslavement and extinction of the human race through our own foolishness and up until then how about we make our own art
There was a progression leading up to it, but Sun Eater by Job For a Cowboy. Went from a detractor to fan over night. What an album. Moon Healer also slays
Definitely!!
This band changed my life in my teen years. Now I can't even look at their podcast uploads without cringing. They are a great band but the time lapse between each album while recieving immense amount of money from fans is suspicious at best. They are lucky to have such a loyal fanbase, I lost all respect for Jari since he started these crowd campaigns.
Dave was never a great vocalist, pretty sure he even admits that. Give him a break though, the bloke’s had throat cancer and thrash has never been known for great vocals to start with.
Agreed, we wished him well
Love Archspire. It's still the funniest live show I've ever seen. Runners up go to Devin Townsend and Powerglove. Their banter is just so outrageous.
Love some good stage banter haha.
I’ll give that guy that Ilud is a better Morbid Angel record than Cold Lake is a Celtic Frost record. Just to compare something else reviled.
Stuff like the Lorna Shore would impact me a ton more if not for The Same Plugins Most Metal Bands Use Nowadays. That’s something which especially impacts more “extreme” genres negatively. Negative dynamics and negative atmosphere is never a net positive for me.
Which plug-ins do you refer to?
Im with you on a lot of prog metal in particular, though Dream Theater do have some really well written songs, but also a lot of technical wankery. I think they would have been a much stronger band with a vocalist who was better with composing more memorable melodic phrasing like Dickinson or Dio.
Great points!
at least Mustaine is worlds better than Vince Neal. I don't think Dave is doing too bad
I'm all for proggy, melodic tech death. Any band that does genre bending work tastefully will get a listen from me.
A few worth a listen (is it tech death...or does it even matter?): beyond creation, first fragment, obscura, inferi, (yes archspire), allegaeon, alkaloid, ne obliviscaris (techy deathy, no clue?) Dessiderium, equipoise, psycroptic, obsidious, rivers of nihil. Good time to be a metal head 😁
Solid bands right there!
100% agree on deathcore and stuff like EDM. I have definitely taken things at an EDM fest and it all made sense. Had the best time of my life hahaha
Eeeyyyyyy lol
I don't think Illud Divinum Insanus is a bad album. I don't think it's good, either. Just interesting to listen to. Still have my copy.
Interesting to hear what Madonnas butthole thinks
As always, interesting content; a fun video. I appreciate the research to identify empirical evidence to make your decisions and further your opinions, ace content! Techdeath definitely works, but it has to be unique/interesting/captivating. Archspire do this.
Thanks buddy we had fun with this one. 🤘
Chist due se sucan u cazz l'un' cu l'atr'
I loved Early Megadeth, now i have a hard time getting through Rust in Peace. But the music is amazing. Like both Eras of Sepultura. Theres some killer stuff in the Derrick era. Deathcore , I like Lorna the best, its the symphonics, blackened vocals , but above all, the melodies. Shadow of Intent is good, they have alot of death metal in there . Not a fan of the huge beakdowns of deathcore, even in the Lorna songs too.
Hell yeah!!
I would love to see a tech death vid. I can somewhat ageee I still think there is a lot of great tech death in the 2000s with bands like Defeated Sanity, Dying Fetus, Nile, Lykathea Aflame, Ulcerate, Decapitated. But it did feel like many tech death bands at that time were trying to copy the Cryptopsy pummeling style of tech death. I do appreciate bands like Archspire for taking it to a more fun, melodic, interesting and more dynamic direction of tech death. Honestly Megadeth is one of my favorite bands of all time. I love Dave’s vocals for nasty aggressive technical thrash metal but with how rough his vocals are getting I almost wish Megadeth would just retire.
I know what ya mean about Megadeth. What makes you think they're still going at it??
I think Obscura does some pretty interesting things. Cosmogenisis is an incredible album.
I grew up with hardcore and I grew into deathcore as its grown up and expanded. But... yeah for Mustaines vocals... painful. Tech death list, yes plz (I love lists)
We might get around to it!
Not really regarding this vid but Axamenta just released their new song since 2006: ruclips.net/video/x3cE2o9ciHk/видео.htmlsi=iVskebJQWaUU8bMO Would love to hear your guys' reactions to it. Think of a proggy version of Dimmu Borgir is probably the best description I can give... They'll be releasing their new EP (which this new song is a compilation of actually) in a couple of weeks. I love their previous album "Ever-Arch-I-Tech-Ture", if you want to know what they're capable of, which you can also find on Spotify/RUclips etc.
Ashenspire >>>> Archspire
Hot take!
I feel like saying that Vince Neil is not a bad guy is an indicator that people seem to have forgotten he was responsible for the death of another human being in a drunk driving accident a few decades ago. Yeah it's the past but he still pretty much got away with murder
I didn’t even know about it until the comments. He belongs right at the top.
@@forgemastermetal for real, he's the lowest of the low. If he wasn't so rich and famous back then, his life would've been over at that point. The things you can get away with if you've got money right?
Just like anything: deathcore has amazing bands and terrible bands. People who blacklist an entire genre aren’t even trying.
What are some genuinely terrible deathcore bands?
Never could get into The Red Chord and I seem to remember a couple of handsome blokes who did not, at all, like Job For A Cowboy back in the day…
@@forgemastermetalWhitechapel gets my vote every time....
Is Deathcore shit? It has Brojob and that's the biggest shit of them all.
I don’t think it is
I can understand what you are saying about them. I personally like them, but in the long run inthink they will be highly influencial. I say that because they make tech death way more approachable than most. Everyone has a band that started them on a path. These guys have that.
I actually quite agree with the third take and slightly agree with the fourth. I love deathcore regardless, but it's honestly way better live and when you actually see the man making these insane noises with his voice right in front of you. Though I'd say this take applies to most metalcore even more than deathcore, I don't enjoy listening casually to metalcore that much but I love going my country's local metalcore scene, have many friends from there and really enjoy seeing bands live. And regarding Morbid Angel, Illud Davinum Insanus is honestly ok, but much better than any of the albums they did without Evil D purely because it's Evil D, and Trey is not there alone doing that solo project thing and the vocals are not generic. I think the lack of Pete Sandoval is what made this album go into this divisive kinda direction
metalcore has good bands. I had a group of friends in a metalcore band called Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh. Nice girls and very sweet.
